The Ultimate Vancouver Engagement Photoshoot Guide

Congratulations on your engagement! This is such an exciting chapter, and what better way to celebrate it than with a romantic and timeless engagement photoshoot?

But where do you even begin?

Being in front of a camera can feel intimidating, especially when you want your photos to look natural and genuine.
We’ve all heard the phrase, “Just act natural,” but what does that actually mean?
This is where your engagement session becomes so valuable.
Not only is it a wonderful way to commemorate this special season in your lives, but it also gives you the opportunity to become comfortable in front of the camera before your wedding day. Even more importantly, it allows us to build a connection and create beautiful, meaningful images together.

We’ve put together this guide to help you prepare for your engagement session, with tips and inspiration to ensure your photos feel effortless, personal, and uniquely yours.

Choosing the Perfect Location

With so many stunning locations around Vancouver—and an endless number of Pinterest boards and Instagram saves—it can feel overwhelming trying to decide where to go.

So, where do you start?

We always encourage our couples to think about what truly inspires them. Are you avid travellers or homebodies? Do you love the mountains and the ocean, or do you feel most at home wandering through the city?

The best engagement photos are often created in places that feel meaningful to you. Choosing a location that reflects your personalities will make your images feel even more authentic.

We also recommend selecting a location with plenty of variety. A spot that offers both ocean views and lush forests, or a combination of cityscapes and natural scenery, allows us to create a diverse gallery while making the most of your session.

What to Wear for Your Engagement Photos

Not sure what to wear? You're certainly not alone.

These photographs will likely find their way onto your wedding website, save-the-date cards, and framed prints in your home, so choosing outfits that feel authentic to you is key.

Here are a few tips:

  • Wear something that makes you feel comfortable and confident. Whether it's a flowing dress, tailored suit, chic denim and a white shirt, or even a couture bridal gown, confidence always photographs beautifully.

  • Rather than matching exactly, choose outfits that complement one another. Think coordinated colours and textures rather than identical looks.

  • Soft neutrals, earthy tones, and pastel shades photograph beautifully, but don't be afraid of bold colours if they reflect your style.

  • Avoid busy prints and logos, as they can distract from the emotion and connection in your images.

And if you'd like a second opinion, we're always happy to help with outfit selections!

Accessories and Layers

Sometimes it's the smallest details that elevate an image.

Statement earrings, sunglasses, hats, scarves, bouquets, or even a beautiful coat can add visual interest and variety to your gallery.

For our grooms, layers are your best friend. A blazer, jacket, or textured knit sweater can add depth and sophistication while creating multiple looks throughout the session.

Timing: Finding the Best Light

Lighting plays a huge role in creating romantic and timeless imagery.

Golden hour - the hour or two before sunset - is often our favourite time to photograph. The soft, glowing light creates beautiful skin tones and adds a dreamy quality to the images.

That being said, overcast days are equally stunning. Think of clouds as nature's diffuser - they soften the light beautifully and create flattering portraits from every angle.

Whenever possible, we recommend scheduling your engagement session on a weekday. Popular Vancouver locations can become busy on weekends, and choosing a quieter day allows for a more relaxed and intimate experience.

Props and Personal Details

Thoughtful details can add personality and tell your story in a meaningful way.

Whether it's a bouquet, a picnic setup, a vintage car, a bottle of champagne, or your favourite coffee shop, incorporating elements that are special to the two of you can make your engagement session even more memorable.

And of course, if you have a beloved fur baby, bring them along! Pets always bring an extra dose of joy and spontaneity to a session.

Communication is Everything

Above all, communication is key.

Share your vision with us. Tell us about your favourite images from our portfolio, your inspirations, and the moments that matter most to you.

The more we understand your personalities and your story, the more intentionally we can curate a session that feels authentic and meaningful.

And most importantly?
Have fun.
Your engagement session is not about perfect poses - it’s about celebrating your relationship and documenting this fleeting season of life.
The best photographs are often found in the in-between moments: the laughter, the quiet glances, and the genuine joy of simply being together.

We can't wait to capture this beautiful chapter of your story.
